Photograph of a man and woman. The photograph is mounted in an ornate trifold card-stock frame and is well oxidized. Printing on front: "Dale Humphrey and Wife Bertha. The Bristol Studio, Galesburg, Mich." Dale Williams Humphrey born 7 August 1897 Richland, died 4 September 1976, buried Prairie Home Cemetery Richland, Michigan. He grew up on a farm in Richland. Later he ran his family' s resort on Gull Lake, Michigan and worked in plant protection at Gibson, Inc., Kalamazoo for 20 years. Dale married Bertha May Downey, born 22 May 1905 Decator, Illinois. Bertha taught third grade in District number 6, died 1984, Kalamazoo, Michigan, buried in Prairie Home Cemetery, Richland, Michigan.

Old Richland School
Description
Photograph of the Richland District #5 school. It was the only Richland district to build a brick school. In 1883 voters approved proposal to build a new building for a sum not to exceed $4,000. When all bids came in higher the school directors dicided to build it themselves. Land was pruchased from S.P. Jewett. Materials and bricks were hauled in by rail, wages for labor began at $1.50 a day and later incresed to $2.50. Teamsters earned more. The Italian revival architectual style building served students from 1884 to 1923. Text on folder: "P378, Abandoned District #5 School, (1920s)."

Robert Franklin Humphrey was the son of Dale and Bertha Humphrey, born in Richland Michigan 15 November 1927, died 13 june 2007 , at Guggenheimer Health and Rehabilitation center, Lynchburg City, Virginia, buried at Fort Hill Memorial Park, Virginia. Robert Humphrey was a vereran of the United States Army and retired from General Electric as a project manager, also member of the Izaak Walton League of Lynchburg, Virginia. He was married to Phyllis Louise Humphrey for 54 years.

Photograph views from the back of the tent looking over the crowd to the stage. The Redpath Chautauqua circult was a traveling group who presenting music dramas, usually school sponsored. This was an adult education movement in rural America that brought entertainment and culture to the community with speakers, musicians and showman. Kalamzoo’s first Chautauqua was held in 1909 and later in 1909. Western State Normal School sponsored the Redpath Chautauqua to come over the next fourteen years until its last appearance in 1926.
