Large group of students sitting outside Lovell Street School, Kalamazoo, Michigan located on the southeast corner of East Lovell and Pine Street, 1891. A teacher sits with them along with a man leaning against a tree. Appears to be a group of lower elementary students. They are dressed in a variety of clothing. Written on the cardboard mounting "Room No. 1 Lovell St. School April 1891." The Lovell Street School was the first separate elementary school built in 1867 as a Queen Anne structure. In 1926, the Lovell Street School because home to the Kalamazoo Public Schools' Administration Building. It was torn down in 1960.

The librarian is Doris Dove (later Williams), the first librarian at the Algansee Branch through a grant for rural areas from the Kellogg Foundation. View includes a suitcase in front of their feet labeled "Branch County Library". The group is seated on book bench labeled "Chew Mail Pouch Treat yourself to the best." Behind the group is a store shop window with advertisements for Eskimo pies, frozen valomilk candy, chocolate, gum, Coco-Cola bottles, and a Detroit Tigers baseball schedule with a tiger mascot. Doris Dove is wearing a plaid dress and the children are wearing summer clothing. Doris Dove was a librarian at Algansee Unit until 1966, when her sister Hazel Wilkinson (nee Dove) was hired.
