Description:
Illustrated book of hours, in Latin, with metal cut borders on every page, full page illustrations, and hand illuminated initials throughout text. Calendar, dated 1502-1520, in French. Metalcut border designs attributed to Jean d’Ypres, also known as Master of Anne de Bretagne (active ca. 1480-1510). The French printer and engraver Philippe Pigouchet (active 1488-1518) and the printer Simon Vostre (active 15th century) worked together to produce hundreds of Books of Hours between 1475 and 1600.
Provenance:
Printed in Paris by Simon Vostre and Pierre Pigouchet about 1502 based on Almanac dated 1502-1520. “Bohatta 752” written in pencil on verso of first flyleaf. Stern-Graveur book plate with motto “ex libris” device on front pastedown. Front cover stamped with "Nicole" in floral border; back cover stamped with "De Viry" in floral border.

Binding:
Contemporary calf over thin wooden boards, stamped with floral border. Front cover stamped with "Nicole" in floral border. Back cover stamped with "De Viry" in floral border. Yellowed parchment. Front and end leaves of modern paper.
Decoration Description:
Simon Vostre's device on title page, featuring a shield hung from a tree, supported by two leopards, and bearing the initials “SV.” 18 full-page metal cuts within architectural borders and 29 small metal cuts in text. Numerous scenes in paneled form with foliate decoration or bars. Many historiated metal cut borders on each page in black ink. On f. 2r, metal cut of the January Planetary Man shown as a skeleton surrounded by zodiacal instructions. Many 1 or 2 line gold initials on alternating grounds of red and blue within text, hand painted. Most initials smudged or missing gold, blue or red ink possibly from water damage. On ff. 91v-115v, text surrounded by renaissance borders decorated with panels of “dance of deaths” sequence. Numerous line fillers on ff. 84v-90v.
Description of Type:
Gothic type, 21 lines per page of printed text, ruled in red. Text in black with single line and two line hand painted blue and red and gold ink initials. Change of hands on last leaf, frame ruled in lead and hand written in gothic. Rubricated in red.
