Title:
R. H. C. Davis Notebook 9
Title Alternative:
Volume IX
Creator:
Davis, R. H. C. (Ralph Henry Carless), 1918-1991
Date:
1938-03-28/1938-12-12
Description:
R. H. C. Davis's notebook surveying the architectural elements of churches throughout parts of England. His title from the first page reads: "Volume IX including visits to parts of Kent, Somerset, Wilts, Oxon, Glos, Cornwall, and Berkshire". The descriptions were recorded from March 28 to December 12, 1938, though some entries have later dates when the writer revisited the sites. Entries are written on the front of the page with corrections or later additions added on the back. At the end of the General Bibliography is a list of Other Places Visited and is continued at the end of the Index. The Other Places Visited include: Reculver Church, Hinton Charterhouse (Somerset), Bath Abbey (Somerset), Bristol Cathedral (Glos), Eton College Chapel (Buckshire?), Barford Saint Michael (Oxford), Deddington Church (Oxford), Woolton? Church (Buckshire), King's College (Cambridge), Queen's College (Cambridge), and Saint John's College (Cambridge). A note with the title indicates that the visits were too brief to be of use, or accounts were appended to earlier accounts. About halfway through the notebook is a typed letter loosely inserted. The letter is addressed to Ralph Davis from John H. Harvey, and dated August 13 1961. John Harvey was a English architectural historian and wrote to Ralph about the puzzling elements of the Edington Church. He also asked Ralph a number of questions, first for suggestions about identifying a mason's marks, and second, for a second opinion on the dating of Albert Memorial Chapel for a St. George's Windsor Friends report. The letter is signed.

Illustration Description:
The illustrations throughout the notebook are in pencil or pen and feature the architectural details of English churches. On inside front cover is a engraving of Reculver, Kent, as well as a printers mark for Emberlin and Son, Oxford, maker of the notebook. A plate on first page shows the interior of St. Mary the Virgin Church, Oxfordshire. A handwritten note under the plate indicates it's from the 'Draconian', no. 130, April 1931, and, according to the author, is "inaccurate". On the following pages, smaller illustrations within the text include diagrams of interior wall naves; capitals with stringcourse ornamentation and mouldings; windows; patterns of quatrefoils, chancels, and rosettes; mason's marks; a sections of piers and bases; sections of tympanums; ground floor plans in color; lintals and arches; tracery; clerestory windows; rubbings of mason's marks; door jambs; the canopy in the St. Mary Redcliffe aisle; the central pillar of the North arcade in Northleigh Church (St. Mary); paintings representing Roman culture; a carving of a knight in Stanton Fitzwarren Church; cinquefoiled or quatrefoils sub-lights within arched windows; types of bases and piers; corbels; abacas; and bays along arcades. Other loosely inserted material includes an engraving of the Castle and Bridge at Rochester (Cathedral) and a pamphlet about Winchester Cathedral.
