Description:
R. H. C. Davis's notebook surveying architectural features of churches throughout France. Davis's title from the cover reads: "XXIV. France, 1949, Poitiers. Cahors. Le Puy." The entries begin July 6, 1949 and continue to July 25, 1949. Some entries have later dates when Davis revisited the sites, particularly in 1981. Organized by date, the entries are written on the front of each page which corrections and later additions from research on the back. Most entries start with a chronology of key dates related to the building's history such as when the building was raised, when it was destroyed, when reconstructions and restorations were made. The list is followed by a summary of architectural elements based on observations and research and, occasionally, reinforced with illustrations. The major themes of the entries include what attracted Davis to return to a site and other most notable features. Entries are predominately written in English with some quotes and inscriptions in Latin.
