R. H. C. Davis Notebook 11
Title Alternative:
Volume VII
Creator:
Davis, R. H. C. (Ralph Henry Carless), 1918-1991
Date:
1937-05-08/1937-10-25
Description:
R. H. C. Davis's notebook surveying the architectural elements of buildings throughout parts of Europe. His title from the first page reads: "Archaeological Notebook Volume VII mainly Germany, but including Paris and a few places in England". The entries were written from May 8, 1937 through October 25, 1937, though some have later dates when Davis revisited the sites. Additional loose material at the end of the notebook is dated September 29, 1938. Organized by location, entries are written on the front of each page with corrections or later additions added on the back. Most entries begin with a chronological history of the building. The history is followed by a summary of notable architectural elements based on observations and research. Many entries include small illustrations, "close-ups" of architectural features. The entries expand on the chronological outline, tracing the stages of development of architectural elements and structures. A theme is dating the various parts of the building and patterns in the development of elements. Some entries mention the masons who made restorations as well as their mason marks. The entries are predominately written in English and some loose material written in German.
