Title:
Merze Tate’s Photographs from India and Japan
Date:
1950-1951
Creator:
Tate, Merze, 1905-1996
Description:
Scrapbook of black and white photographs taken in Southeast Asia and Japan from 1950 to 1951. Merze Tate was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship in 1950-1951 to teach geopolitics in India and was attached to the Visva-Bharati University as a visiting professor. She also took the opportunity to travel to other countries in East Asia and was commissioned by the U.S. State Department to produce travelogues of the places she visited. She traveled solo accompanied, as she put it, only by her camera. The photographs in this scrapbook feature views of Royal Palace of Kandy (Sri Lanka), Nikko National Park and shrines (Japan), fire walking in Rangoon (Burma), people and architecture of Mandalay (Burma), various temples and shrines in Japan, and African American soldiers stationed in Japan. Among the photos are clippings from local newspapers announcing convocations and lectures in which Merze Tate participated.
