Description:
Twelfth century leaf from an early choir book with readings for feast day of Saint Mauricius the Martyr (d. 287), the leader of a Theban Roman legion who refused to harass Christians in Switzerland and was murdered along with his 6,000 soldiers (the saint became the patron of the Holy Roman emperors and later the Vatican's Swiss Guard). Water damage to leaf has rubbed off some text and staves.

Presumably used as a rear pastedown; discoloration from paste visible in upper, outer, and lower margins on the verso.
Decoration Description:
2-line initials with flourishes alternating red and blue; rubricated in red; the saint�s name appears in alternate red and black capitals on the bottom of the verso.
Description of Hands:
1 column of about 21 lines in dark brown ink in unknown ruling; text fading from leaf with some loss of text.
Musical Notation:
Neumes on red and green staves.
