Miller, associate professor of English since 1946, was awarded a grant given by the Fund for the Advancement of Education, a branch of the Ford Foundation, to study in the United States. Chester L. Hunt, associate professor of sociology, was awarded a Fulbright grant for the 1952-53 school year to serve as a lecturer in sociology at the University of the Philippines. Elsworth Woods, professor of the political science department from 1949-1955, was selected for an instructorship in general education at Harvard University. After completing this study period, he headed of the Basic Studies program.

1st Presbyterian Church in winter at night, 1970
Description
Night photograph, by Lance Ferraro of The Richland Presbyterian Church. Text on back: "Night Picture by Lance Ferraro. Donated by Sharon Ferraro 9-08 EH. Richland, M First Presbyterian Church." Founders of the church were settlers from Hudson, Ohio. In 1831 the Presbyterian congregation was organized under the 1801 Plan of Union adopted by the Presbyterian and Congregationalists for churches west of New York. The conjoining of both denominations were called Presbygationalists. Under the pastorate of Milton Bradley, at a cost of $7,000, the church was dedicated on 27 February 1861. The original bell cracked and was replaced in 1881. In 1886 the bell tower was reduced in height 30 feet. In 1952 the interior was altered, but the original pews remained.

Man seated on a horse-drawn, open bed wagon with two men in long coats standing. Sign on wagon reads: "We are delivering 40 Remington Typewriters to Kalamazoo Public Schools." Photo was taken at the southwest corner of South West Street and Pearl Street. Behind the wagon is Kalamazoo High School (third building, 1898-1922) with 1913 gymnasium addition. Typewriters were delivered to coincide with the Michigan State Teachers Association convention that was held in Kalamazoo, Michigan.
