Photograph of Carl Kleinstueck (1853-1916) standing outdoors wearing buckskins, fur hat and tall boots holding a rifle or shotgun. Two dachshunds under him. Winter with bare trees around. Carl looking off in distance. Born in Saxony, Germany, Carl Kleinstueck came to the Kalamazoo area in 1885. He owned the land between Howard St. and the present Spruce Drive, from Oakland Drive to Stearns Ave which he called “Saxonia Farms.” The land included what would become Hillcrest neighborhood. The Kleinstueck (also Kleinstuck) Preserve is named after him.
