Description
Large group of students sitting outside Lovell Street School, Kalamazoo, Michigan located on the southeast corner of East Lovell and Pine Street, 1891. A teacher sits with them along with a man leaning against a tree. Appears to be a group of lower elementary students. They are dressed in a variety of clothing. Written on the cardboard mounting "Room No. 1 Lovell St. School April 1891." The Lovell Street School was the first separate elementary school built in 1867 as a Queen Anne structure. In 1926, the Lovell Street School because home to the Kalamazoo Public Schools’ Administration Building. It was torn down in 1960.

Founded in 1868, the Pavilion Center School (Pavilion School #4) was the last one-room school in Kalamazoo County. It use used until 1965.
