Description:
Letter from Paul Pommer, addressed to the family of Gust. (Gustav) Pommer in Frankfurt, Germany. Envelope is postmarked Darmstadt, Übungsplatz. Letter is dated November 15, 1916. Paul greets his mother and describes his early experience with military service, including aspects of being stationed at Darmstadt, daily routines, issues with rat infestations, cold winter weather, and his various activities, which included watching films and manual labor. On the third page he talks about the expected mindset of the soldiers, and on the fourth page he mentions the visit of a pastor and the swearing-in ceremony. He continues writing to his mother, requesting the delivery of a hand towel. The last leaf is written on a smaller piece of paper and contains his sign-off. His correspondence was written in four sections due to interruptions while on duty, and you can see the difference in surfaces in the writing.
