Description:

R. H. C. Davis's notebook surveying church architecture throughout parts of Middle and South England. Davis's title on the cover of the notebook reads: "Volume XXIII". The entries begin on August 8, 1948 and continue intermittently to April 7, 1959. Some entries have multiple dates indicating when Davis revisited the sites. Most entries begin with chronological list of dates and mark key events such as restoration and remodeling campaigns, destruction by war or natural disastor, and when additions were made. Major themes throughout the notebook include examining the origins of certain architectural features of Norman influence, a critical look at other researcher's conclusions, drawing his own conclusions and impressions, examing parallel features between other buildings, the uses and functions and conditions of certain features, and historical contexts. Many entries include notes from other researcher's published words. Throughout the notebook, Davis was particularly interested in mason marks which accounts for most of the small illustrations.
