Description:

R. H. C. Davis's notebook surveying the archaeological and architectural features of buildings throughout Rome and Greece. Davis's title from the first page reads: "Archaeological Notebook Volume VI [6], March 11th - May 6th, 1937, Greece and Rome, mainly consisting of notes on churches seen there, because they don't get so much attention. Artistically they are inferior to the classical, but they are much more interesting." A note on the inside front cover reads: "the holiday being, a collective travel scholarship from Leighton Park, except for the last few days in Rome; with L. H. Scott esquire (leader, artistic, poetic, and organized expert), I. P. Goodwin (sculptural and bird expert), G. G. Isaacs (theatrical expert), H. M. Wilmersdoerffer (Fraser-Pausanias expert), and D. A. Pyke (Floral expert)." Organized by date, the entries are written on the front page with corrections and later additions added on the back. Themes from the entries are Ancient Greek architecture style periods and Byzantine style periods. Each entry includes observations, analysis, draws historical comparisons and evidences, critically evaluates the site in relation to previous architectures, and investigates the conclusions of other scholars. In particular, Davis emphasizes observation and analysis of the certain features from the perspective of a historian.
