Date:
1959
Description:
R. H. C. Davis's notebook surveying the architectural elements of churches and castles from parts of Europe. His title from the cover reads: "Volume XXVI, Normandy Brittany Anjou, 1959". Text on the inside front cover reads: "Nerton [Merton] College, Oxford" and is followed by a series of bibliographic references. The entries begin April 1959 and continue through August 1959, though some entries have later dates (particularly in 1962 and 1987) when the Davis revisited the sites. Most entries begin with a chronology of key events related to the site's history. Following the list are brief descriptions which expand on the the important dates, theorize when architectural features were made, and carefully examine the influences of the building. A major theme of the entries features excavation reports and discoveries. The summaries include quotes from published research. The majority of the text is written in English with some quotes written in Latin and loose material at the end of the notebook written in French.
