An account book for the Poorhouse and Farm in Kalamazoo County listing poorhouse residents and the accounts in their names, from between 1871 through 1894. (A typed label on the front cover indicates the ledger covers 1871-1880, but entries continue to 1894.) The ledger lists the date, account holder's name, and costs accrued for the supplies and services rendered. The supplies and services include: keeper of the poorhouse; labor, seed and fertilizers used on the farm; stock, utensils, and furniture used on farm; all other expenses including clothing, etc.; medical attendence on farm; repair of buildings; new buildings; transportation of the poor; medical attendence; supervisors services; supplies furnished; interments, and future use. The ledger also includes the order number, amount total of norder, total receipts and total amount paid. The entries are listed in chronological order, no index. First entry begins with starting balance on hand per annual report and appropriated amount by Board of Supervisers.
Physical Description:
The ledger has 394 pages of handwritten, calligraphic cursive and measures 12 x 16 inches. The inside front cover has a bookplate for the Kalamazoo Blank Book Manufacturing, Chaplin and Ihling Brothers in Kalamazoo, Michigan. The ledger is number 860. The cover is worn. Binding includes marbled end-papers.
