Letter from musketeer Paul Pommer, addressed to Gust. (Gustav) Pommer in Frankfurt, Germany. Dated February 2, and postmarked February 10, 1918, Wetteren. Paul greets his father. He received his letter that Friday, and always looks forward to corresponding with his mother and father. He expresses the importance for a soldier to think about the grace of God, whom he puts faith in, and feels safe because of His presence. Although on the front one finds many sins and moral wrongdoings. He writes about how after his comrades go to bed, he often stays up and reads a book or newspaper, if he is not writing letters. He writes of Belgium. He's met a few nice men and often talks to them. One finds the same sad circumstances in Belgium that one finds in Germany. But morals are deep-rooted in the people of the region, despite these circumstances. Everyone sings together sometimes, and he sends his heart out to his family, and remembers singing with them back home. He thanks God that things had been pretty good until this moment, for his tonsils are getting swollen again due to the wet weather the day before. He tried to rinse out his throat in a stream to subdue the swelling but had no luck. Medication makes him dizzy, so that is not an option on the field. His regiment will be sent to a new location soon. He closes by writing how issues with rations are very typical in the war, affecting his situation.
